Guidelines for Blogging

I ran across these “Guidelines for Blogging” today and thought some of you might be interested.
". . . talking about all our NOT rules and how that makes the students focus on what
NOT to do. I agree. Don't get me wrong, I agree with these NOTS but I
think we are missing the boat. We need to focus on the possibilities."

I thought her approach was good, talking about how so many of the “rules” are about what not to do, instead of what you should do. And that students might respond better to what they should do.

Along with that, here's a post (along with links) to a discussion about being careful as a teacher with blogs and some of the things we need to keep in mind.

  1. I like the idea of focusing on positive rules rather than negative rules. The second post really made me nervous, though! I have never heard of "cyberbullying" before, but I hate to think that it could happen on our class blogs. At the same time, I wonder why someone would do it in a situation where the teacher is monitoring all comments.

  2. This scares me a little in terms of the cyberbullying, but I do think when kids have a say in what is posted and commented(like having them decided as a class what the rules are regarding the blog), they are more likely to adhere to those rules. I especially think the blogging rules they have listed are ones we could discuss as a class.
